Celluloid and plastic sweat shields.

"L" was used twice in the letter date code. First on the 1973 celluloid sweat shields and for 1987 on the diamond shape plastic shields.
The letter date code begain in 1968, more or less... here are two sweat shilds from1969 both from the same VEB.
The plastic diamond sweat shield was first used in 1982 "I". Apparently the old celluloid sweat shield was last used for 1982 "I".
